Visiting an LCMS Church
According to the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), a visit to one of its congregations is an opportunity to experience traditional, Christ-centered worship in a welcoming atmosphere. While the LCMS website offers guidance for visitors, remember that each parish has a unique local culture, so it's always good practice to introduce yourself to the pastor and members.
What to expect in the service
The LCMS refers to its service as the "Divine Service," emphasizing that God is the one who serves us through His Word and Sacraments. Services typically follow a historic, liturgical pattern, which includes:
Confession and absolution: The congregation confesses its sins together and receives the pastor's declaration of forgiveness from God.
The Service of the Word: You will hear Scripture readings from the Old Testament, the New Testament epistles, and one of the Gospels. A sermon, centered on Jesus Christ, is then preached to deliver both the Law (which shows our sin) and the Gospel (which offers salvation).
The Service of the Sacrament: In most services, Holy Communion is offered.
Hymns and music: The liturgy includes many hymns from the Lutheran Service Book, often accompanied by an organ.
On Holy Communion (Closed Communion)
The LCMS practices "closed communion," meaning that only members of LCMS congregations or partner church bodies are ordinarily invited to the Lord's Table. This is not meant to be unwelcoming but is rooted in the biblical teaching that participation in the Lord's Supper is an expression of unity in faith and confession. If you are not a member of an LCMS congregation, you are still welcome to come forward for a blessing during communion. It is considered good etiquette to speak with the pastor beforehand if you have questions or wish to receive a blessing.
Dress and decorum
Regarding what to wear, most LCMS churches do not have a strict dress code. Attire can range from casual to more formal, but the focus is on reverence for being in God's house. You will also notice the use of traditional vestments, altar cloths, and banners that change colors throughout the church year.
After the service
Following the Divine Service, many congregations host a coffee hour or fellowship time. This is a great opportunity to meet the pastor and other members of the church. LCMS congregations encourage visitors to introduce themselves so they can get connected with others.
In an LCMS church, you will be met with a traditional, reverent, and Christ-centered experience. If you are a visitor, you can feel comfortable following along with the provided bulletin or hymnal and simply absorbing the ancient liturgy, which has been nourishing Christians for centuries.
