Sacraments

According to the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), sacraments are sacred acts that fulfill three requirements: they were instituted by God, they include a visible, earthly element, and they convey God's forgiveness and grace. While some Lutherans identify two sacraments and others three, Baptism and Holy Communion are the two primary sacraments.

Holy Baptism

Using water combined with God's word, Baptism works forgiveness of sins, delivers from death and the devil, and grants eternal salvation. Through this action, the Holy Spirit creates or strengthens saving faith and claims an individual as a child of God. This applies to infants and adults alike.

Holy Communion

Also called the Lord's Supper or Sacrament of the Altar, this is a miraculous meal where Jesus's true body and blood are present "in, with, and under" the bread and wine. This communion grants the forgiveness of sins and strengthens faith. The LCMS practices "close communion," sharing this sacrament only with those who share the same confession of faith.

Holy Absolution

Sometimes counted as a third sacrament, Holy Absolution is the forgiveness of sins declared by a pastor, which, while lacking a physical element, still delivers the forgiveness of sins earned by Christ. This can be done privately during confession or to the entire congregation.
